CHEMISTRY: WEEK 10
CLEANING SUPPLIES IN MY HOUSEHOLD:
- Windex
- Soft Scrub
- Meyer's Multi Purpose Spray
- Weimann's Stainless Steel Cleaner
- Seventh Generation Dishwasher Detergent
- Murphy's Oil Soap
- Ceramabrite
- Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner
Some of the cleaning products have been chosen as "cleaner" alternatives to standard products such as the dishwasher fluid. I chose other products such as Windex based on effectiveness. I found that I have a mixture of products with some possibly being more toxic than others but I generally am mindful of choosing the better alternative if possible.
While shopping in the stores, I am seeing more and more companies that are making safer alternatives to cleaning products. Brands such as Seventh Generation have entire lines dedicated to cleaning supplies from toilet cleaners to laundry detergents. Ingredients included on their lists have less negative impact on the environment and have lower toxicity scores on websites such as the Environmental Working Group. The public is becoming more aware of commercial toxins within our own homes and the demand for safer alternatives is constantly growing. Some people have gone back to the basics by using items such as vinegar, salt and baking soda as their only cleaning products.
The desire to decrease our exposure to toxins stems from an increased awareness of our daily exposure to environmental toxins that we cannot control. The inability to control the things we are exposed to when we strep outside our homes has strengthened our inclination to make our homes a safer environment by controlling what we bring inside to use or consume.
Thanks for sharing- I try to use non-toxic cleaning products and know that the effectiveness is definitely a hard point. Definitely nothing cuts grease quite like Cascade soap! But I think the demand for less toxic cleaning products is helping new environmental lines make more effective products, so things are getting a little better. And I agree that most of us are trying to make our homes less toxic because the world outside is so toxic, the little things help a little bit.
