BIOLOGY: WEEK 3

Human and chimp genes being 99.4 % identical in the most critical DNA sites proves that both species are more similar than humans would like to think.  We have always tried to separate ourselves apart from the rest of the  animal kingdom because we like to think of ourselves as the superior species.  We also have used religion to justify our dominance over animals through creation stories that discredit the process of evolution.  The fact that our DNA has been proven to be so similar to chimpanzees confirms the humble truth that we are indeed animals ourselves.  We are not the remarkably superior beings that adorned Botticelli paintings during the Renaissance wearing flowing golden robes and radiating beams of light.  Humans have single-handedly been the most destructive species on this planet, relentlessly over populating the world and destroying as many resources as we see fit.

"Man in his arrogance thinks of himself as a great work, worthy the interposition of a deity.  Yet it is more humble, and I believe, true to consider him created from animals."
-Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man

I've tracked my sleep over the past week and discovered that I have been having vivid dreams over the course of the waxing moon.  I also noticed that I woke up often around 3:30 AM during this time.  After the full moon on the 29th, I noticed that I woke up around 4:30 AM and fell back asleep until 6:00 AM.  During the week, I felt most alert and had the most stable mental energy if I slept for longer hours during the night.  However, if my hours were cut short due to interrupted sleep, I had a more intense crash due to fatigue in the afternoon.  Less sleep usually means that I have a lower tolerance for stress and anxiety in general.  It also contributes to a decrease in mental focus for school and work related tasks.

  1. good explanation about Chimp,I agree that we are just different animal and nothing more about your sleeping I wished that you could give us an exact time about going to bed ,it could give us more vision of how many hours you are able to sleep.

  2. I love your quote from Charles Darwin because it perfectly encapsulates your description on how we should view ourselves as animals as well! The commentary about Botticelli and the Renaissance is so very true and raises questions to where our values as animals stand today.
