PHYSICS: WEEK 6

Organized chaos can be described as the process of gaining desirable outcomes through a state of disorder.  This might reveal a hidden natural order that governs all living things, even when the environment seems chaotic.  If we think of the principles of yin and yang, we see that there is always an element of both within each other.  Therefore, chaos resides in order and order resides within chaos.  Organized chaos provides an environment for unpredictability and ultimately, creativity.  The lack of a system of rigid order results in numerous creative possibilities and outcomes.  Chaos can be seen as an environment of freedom that provides a breeding ground for systems of natural order to arise

A fractal system is a complex, non-linear interactive system which has the ability to adapt to a changing environment.  Such systems are characterized by the potential for self organization, existing in a non-equilibrium environment.  Change in these systems can be understood as a kind of self organization resulting from enhanced interconnectivity as well as connectivity to the environment and  experimenting with alternative rules.  Examples of fractal systems include living organisms, the immune system and the environment.  Here we see the theory of organized chaos as a reappearing theme.  Unpredictability is synonymous with creativity.

Consciousness is the fact of awareness by the mind of itself and of the world.  Although we perceive our consciousness as a personal awareness, it is something much deeper than an isolated experience.  Consciousness is a field that interacts with other fields.  In physics, a field is a medium of connectivity in which magnetic and electrical lines of force are in operation.  Each individual consciousness is connected to a larger pool of consciousness that pervades the entire universe.  The evolution of consciousness can be seen as the process of chaos moving into structure and dissolving back into chaos.  We can see this as the bright and active yang emerging from the dark and formless sea of yin or in the way qi and blood are dependent on each other.  The heavy yin quality of blood gives birth to the light and mobile quality of qi.  One of the mysteries of consciousness is that it might be the intelligence behind the unstructured nature of chaos.

  1. I really appreciate your comment on how chaos provides an environment for creativity. I have seen beautiful passionate artwork framed in a background of destruction and despair that seemed to offer hope. Maybe we will still find compassion and tolerance from the chaos that has resulted from Trump and his cronies.

  3. I really like your comparisons with chaos and TCM principles like yin and yang and yes, I agree with Michelle, the comment on how chaos provides an environment for creativity. Most of my own art and poetry would have never happened if chaotic events never occurred in my life. As with much of art and creativity in life, chaos is a necessary component. We wouldn't know happiness without sadness and vice versa.
