RACHELLE'S PHYSICS BIO
I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and have been living in the Bay Area with my family since 2004. I've worked an esthetician for the past decade by helping clients achieve their skin care goals. I am now dedicated to being a student in Chinese medicine school and fulfilling an interest that was sparked long ago as a young child in my grandmother's kitchen. She brought her knowledge of village medicine from China to the United States and used it in our household to treat various illnesses and ailments. I am hopeful that my current journey will be a bridge for the knowledge of the inner and outer landscapes of the human body.
What a beautiful intro to Chinese Medicine! I'd love to hear more about your grandma's recipes, or traditions, or habits. Does anything in school remind you of her? What knowledge have you used of hers? My paternal grandmother was Japanese and would introduce me to foods like Konyaku and shabu shabu but she didn't have any medicinal tidbits, or maybe it's because I didn't know enough to ask her.
ReplyDeleteThe smell of the herb room reminds me of her. As a child, I remember how I thought the smell of Chinese herbs was so stinky! I think my grandma would be proud of me being in TCM school if she were alive today. One of my favorite things she did when I was sick was a village fire ritual in which she would light a pile of newspapers on fire and carry me over the fire as she chanted to release the illness out of me. I remembering feeling instantly better as she swung me over the fire cause I thought it was fun!
DeleteThank you for sharing about yourself and your family! What is your esthetician practice called? I'd love to check out what you do. It's powerful to hear that you have connection to this medicine through your grandma, did you learn remedies from her? My family taught me very basic remedies & practices, like sugarcane tea cooked with garlic & ginger for colds & flus, and how to use the lid of a jar as a guasha tool!
ReplyDeleteI work at Aya Salon in Berkeley. I didn't learn any of her herbal concoctions, but was able to take away a foundation of traditional eating that encompassed some of the elements of TCM. I was also exposed to health practices that were rooted in Chinese medicine!
